Intro to radio

BBC Sounds

1) The article suggests that BBC radio is in rude health as it has half the national market with dozens of stations reaching more than 34 million a week. The problem is that ever since the BBC was founded almost a century ago it has been based around an era of broadcasting that was designed towards a comprehensive offering, a shared listening and then viewing experience.

2) Theres only a percentage of just 3% of under 35s use the iplayer catch up radio app which will soon be axed.

3) BBC sounds is a new app and website that brings radio live streams, catch-up services, music mixes and podcasts all together.

4) Audiences nowadays listen to radio content through they're phones on several apps like Spotify and Apple podcast.

5) Jason Philips suggests that theres a need to reconsider entire tone of how the BBC tells stories shifting away from rigid formality. He said that "if it wants to attract the precious under 35 audience it has to be a warmer more story led journey. You need to report the very personal experience of it.

6) The BBC needs to stay relevant as they were until recently banned from creating online-only podcasts for competition reasons so currently they're trying to make up for lost time.

7) BBC sound offers a variety of content like music, news drama, documentaries, true crime, comedy etc.

8) The app lets you click through to any live BBC radio station but it also offers you other forms of listening from podcasts to playlists.

9) One of the reviews main criticisms of BBC sound is that it simply doesn't have enough content. Sounds needs to feel as packed as Netflix in order to properly work and compete.

10) The two new podcasts that launched alongside the BBC sound app are End of Days and Beyond Today. Beyond Today is an attempt to mimic the New York Times's successfu The Daily programme. he first is about whether the UK has enough money, had too many audio tricks; the second about an Iraqi instagram star killed for being too provocative. End of Days is a gripping tale where they talked to the Waco cult victims families and friends, the first episode is very vague but enticing.
