Music video- The specials: Ghost town

1) The writer links the song back to cinematic soundtracks in order to reflect and engender anxiety  2) 2 Tone emerged from the mod and punk subcultures in a stylistic sense. Its foundations were ska and the related Rocksteady. 3) The social contexts that were discussed regarding the late 1981 was that England was hit by a recession and riots were breaking out across its urban areas. Young people, black and white, were deprived angry and forgotten. Left to fend for themselves, many of them were unemployed and got into pitch battles with the police. 4)I believe the most eerie thing about ghost town is the cold and empty environments with only the performers ever being on screen and whenever they give you a perspective outside it all seems cold and unwelcoming. Especially at the night portion of the video where this eerie feeling is a lot more intensified during scenes like they're shadows fighting. 5) The writer suggests that the meanings created from this music video are the mournf

Rise of foreign language TV

Independent-British Viewers 1) The article suggests that the traditional audience for foreign language subtitled media were a very small demographic of people who had unusual taste in shows at that time. 2) Walter Luzollino suggests the key appeal to the Walter presents show is its broad range of shows from different countries. Each new episode seems to take the audience to a new world. 3) The article claims that the popularity of subtitles as that it requires more concentration then an average TV drama. When you read subtitles you have to be glued to the screen and as such it becomes a whole lot more personal for the viewer. 4) One of the audience pleasures that the article suggests is basically surveillance since people from around the world are able to learn and get invested into content from other cultures/countries.  5) TV companies increasingly use audiences to inform them on the production process by doing things like making them leave reviews so that they can adapt and improve

Music video theory

This is America-Music video 1) The music video This is America meets a lot of the key conventions of a music video despite it having an underlying narrative its trying to tell. Its very performance orientated with Childish Gambino being at the forefront of the video and staring at the camera intently (direct address). The video even has backup dancers/singers in the background. 2) The music video comments on gun violence and deconstructs Americas false reality of being a place of safety. Throughout the video the black community seems to be minding they're own business but get shot down for no reason whilst the people in the background seem to just clean everything up and act like nothing happened. This video presents these problems of racism and gun violence through the narrative in the music video. 3)  Gilroy The black Atlantic- Throughout the video it could be claimed that the black community doesn't have a place of belonging since whatever they do or wherever they go they ge

TV: Capital Marxism and Hegemony

  1) The mail online review suggests that Capital holds a left wing ideology through some of there characters in the show and how the show actively attempts to hate on British life in general. 2) Three quotes that were said from the mails online review are. The hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant that was determined to pay her way and not touch a penny of benefits. Everything British came with a sense of self loathing. It started with such a brilliant display but by the end of it we were left staring at a proverbial damn squib. 3) Some scenes or characters that could be seen as promoting left wing ideology are Quentina as she's represented as a victim whose been exploited by the system severely but she herself can do no wrong. The scene with the Kamal family where they insult and ridicule the police officers work. Lastly Rodger being a banker and only focusing on the money he can make. 4) The scene where we get to see the employees at Rodgers workplace with all of

Music video Introduction

 1) The purpose of music is to sell products. This can be products featured within the music video, the album, merchandise (T-shirts) or maybe even to sell tickets to an upcoming tour.  2) Prior to the digital age acquiring full access to a song with it only being available at certain times that had to be approved by a record company. New technology has eradicated this previous problem with audiences being able to access music from anywhere and at anytime using apps like Youtube. 3) The major record labels behind VEVO are Sony entertainment, Universal music group and Abu Dhabbi 4) Some of the key conventions of a music video are a performance element being ingrained inside the video(close ups of artists),Camera shots (links to performance element),Movement of the camera itself having a narrative, Costume associated with the genre,  5) Narrative can be used within a music video to tell a story revolving around the performer or to make a statement as the world around us. A classic exampl

TV assessment Learner Response

 1) WWW- You make a lot of good points across both questions and now need to expand them to add the depth and detail demanded for the top levels. E.g. Your D83 paragraph on reality is great but only 3 sentences long. EBI- Develop longer paragraphs that explore aspects of the question in more depth with examples from the CSP's and media theories. - Capital is much weaker than D83 in this essay so revise/practice that area. 2) Missed points for each question The main central image suggests a bridge between James Bond and Austin Powers (Bond parody) with tower bridge in the background referencing London as the location Capital has been accused of Left wing bias for its negative representation of wealth/upper middle class and has a positive representation of multiculturalism and illegal immigrants. Deutschland 83 is structured between the binary oppositions of East and West Germany. 3)Bricolage is the combining of two different materials/texts to create a new meaning.    Pastiche is a

Impact of new digital Media

Netflix and the culture industries   1) The indsutry concept in A level media refers to the companies that create and distribute media texts, the standard practices of media production, as well as the regulatory and legal frameworks in which companies operate. 2) Hesmondhalgh argues that since the 1980s theres been a significant shift in cultural production with they're being several changes that have transpired when comparing the two times.  3) Hesmondhalgh has a wide range of topics that he covers with his books. I believe the 3 most significant points are: Niche audiences are increasingly targeted. There has been an increase in media corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry. Digitisation has allowed the technology sector to compete directly with traditional media companies. I believe these to be the most significant because there are extreme differences between right now and the 1980s especially when you take these points into account. Niche audiences a

Deutschland 83 Case study

Introduction: Reviews and features. 1) Reviews of Deutschland83 Positives- The mall scene is a perfect moment in a near perfect series and it was the most watched foreign language drama in UK history. Negatives- By the time the last episode was shown in Germany it had shed more then half its starting audience. 2) The 2nd article suggests that the Germans didn't like the show due to its socialist regime world view. They paint west Germany in a negative light and pose them as a potential existential threat to humanity. Theres also the stereotypes they reinforce like Stasi officers being cruel Ideologists who blackmail family members, West Germany officers having messed up private lives while being honest people etc. 3) 3 Comments from the audience:  "Its excellent, have it on DVD well worth a watch!" "It has a subtlety sadly missing from 90% of German comedy" "Far too many plot holes to be taken seriously" Interview 1) Jonas Nay says that he lived in a v

Media paper 2 learner response

 1) WWW- This is a tricky one to mark- You've made some brilliant points but also missed out large chunks of what you need to cover. Hopefully some work on exam technique you should be looking at the top levels.  EBI: In both questions what you have written is very good but it just stops when it should be getting started! Is timing an issue? Would planning help? is it worth looking into extra time? You must cover both CSPS the lack of D83 holds you back you are discussing some high level ideas but are stuck at the lower levels. (also revise hegemony) 2) Two aspects i could have used for the unseen question. The use of costume and props to construct teen stereotypes (leather/biker jacket, cat ears etc) The link between genre and stereotypes- The representation of victim in the thriller/crime drama. 3)Some of the terminology i could use is: Iconography-uses of images and symbols to create meaning.  4) Three arguements i could have used are: D83 provides a compelling argument for Stua
