Sound Analysis
1)
Clockwork Orange- The music choice isn't what I would expect from this type of scene from that movie with all the chaos going on around it as the guy hits them all into the water and holds a knife. I believe the director chose this music to show us what hes thinking not just from there internal monologue but through non diagetic sound. The characters mind sees his actions as methodical and planned so everything going on is within his control.
Funny Games- At the beginning the music seems to be parallel to whats going on in the scene with a nice calm and classic song maybe trying to show that the family is just your everyday normal group of people. Then near the middle the music takes a drastic shift and becomes contrapuntel to whats going on. The director might be trying to say that underneath the façade of them being normal they're lives are in constant chaos. The 2nd music was loud and a obnoxious. The narrative might delve into how a stereotypical family would react to certain events.
Life On Mars- The use of funk music helps tell the audience that this isn't set during modern day and helps tell us the style of the area they live in. The non diagetic sound being used in conjunction with the diagetic sound helps tell us the dynamic between the characters and how despite them working it has a light hearted tone to it.
Once upon a Time in the West- They create tension with a variety of sounds, the dripping of water constantly falling, the buzz a fly drifting around a character, the rocking of a chair etc. These all build up tension as they change from time to time; the fly gets silenced by a gun only to return its routine. There is a sound bridge right near the end where the trains noise starts.
Once upon a Time in America- Theres mostly diagetic sound within the scenes with the ring of the bell, the pouring of the rain and the classic music playing while people were dancing. The non diagetic sound might be the high pitched screech during the end of the clip. They use the sound of the phone to help the audience realise that none of what we are seeing is happening in the current time and most of this seems to be a memory from the characters past.
2)
It starts with a diagetic beeping sound the characters can hear and then quickly adds in an ever increasing non diagetic sound. The beginning represents there state of safety and ignorance of whats coming straight for them. The non diagetic sound only increases as time goes on while the diagetic sound is drowned out by it as the debris starts to hit the space station. Theres dialogue during all of this with it taking precedence over the other sounds. The music only stops once the main character detaches themselves from the station. The repeated theme increases the tension going on around the scene.
