Regulation: Film industries

 1) The BBFC is responsible for guiding families to films that's alright for them to view and help them avoid what isn't. There work must be impartial when deciding the age rating for films and there process for classifying content is always changing. They must consider whether the content provided is against the law (Animal cruelty, obscenity, indecent images of youth etc).  Its an independent non governmental body funded by charged fees. (Film distributors have always paid a fee to have their work rated)

2) The BBFC classifies films using the BBFC classification guidelines and the compliance manager usually approves of the decision. If the compliance manager doesn't then they show the film to other members of the BBFC or ask for specialist advice about the legal ambiguity of the film. Compliance officers usually look at issues such as sex, violence, drugs, bad language and discrimination.

3) The BBFC outlines there guidelines for the public and the industry, these guidelines contain specific details about the acceptability of certain issues at different category levels and to what extent can they dive into the issues. These issues are:

  • Is the content against the law
  • Whether the content in combination with content of a similar nature can cause any harm with the category concerned
  • Whether the availability is acceptable to the public and the age group concerned
4) The dark knight was classified as a 12A which sparked a lot of coverage and complaints about its rating. People believe the movie to be exceedingly violent to be placed in this category.

5)12A films aren't suitable for children under the age of 12 unless they're accompanied by an adult. This ratings guidelines are:
  • Discriminatory language/behaviour must not be endorsed at all.
  • Drugs must not be glamourized
  • Nudity/sex must be discrete and brief with only references to it.
  • Bad language must be moderate
  • Overall scenes must not be disturbing in terms of horror
  • Violence should be impressionistic
6)Blinded by the light was rated a 12 due to its themes of discrimination and its language. There are racists mentions about "pakis" and are disrespected throughout the film however racism wasn't condoned. The bad language in this film wasn't that severe with characters occasionally saying things like "wanker" or shit.
