Impact of new digital Media

Netflix and the culture industries

1) The indsutry concept in A level media refers to the companies that create and distribute media texts, the standard practices of media production, as well as the regulatory and legal frameworks in which companies operate.

2) Hesmondhalgh argues that since the 1980s theres been a significant shift in cultural production with they're being several changes that have transpired when comparing the two times.

3) Hesmondhalgh has a wide range of topics that he covers with his books. I believe the 3 most significant points are:

  1. Niche audiences are increasingly targeted.
  2. There has been an increase in media corporations owning companies in different sectors of the industry.
  3. Digitisation has allowed the technology sector to compete directly with traditional media companies.
I believe these to be the most significant because there are extreme differences between right now and the 1980s especially when you take these points into account. Niche audiences and topics have become increasingly popular and shown to mass audiences (E.G marvel comics becoming a lot more popular from they're films.) Technology has made it far easier for everyone to produce they're visions into reality and companies are realising the value of diversification.

4) Technological convergence is the tendency that as technology changes, different technological systems sometimes evolve toward performing similar tasks. Digitisation of media meant every media form could be accessed on computers.

5) Technology companies challenge traditional broadcasters through various means. One of those ways is by being able to micro-target niche audiences and the advertisers can be confident that their message is getting to their desired audience. Another is that they've avoided being regulated as media companies (e.g. Google's YouTube hosts extremist content and is fine but if a traditional broadcaster aired similar content they would be fined and may even lose their license.

6) The budgets Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next are: Netflix = 8 billion on original material, Amazon 4.5 billion and Apple = 1 billion.

7) Netflix is available in 190 countries while Amazon is open in 200.

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences whilst creating content a good example of this is in Stranger things where they translated the name of the monster "Demogorgon" in several different cultures.

9) Google, Facebook and Amazon may increase their interest in the television industry later due to there being a global market for it and they're still being a demand for more content in the television industry. Google might just invest in new original series's on Youtube originals and amazon may continue and expand they're portfolio.

10) Changes in technologies influence have influenced TV dramas like Capital and Deutschland 83 with how D83 is able to recreate the aesthetic of what East and West Germany may have looked like and been like in person. Also its allowed them to have an international audience rather being stuck with only German viewers (Who didnt particularly enjoy D83 anyway).

The Guardian

1) The traditional lengths for British TV dramas was 46-48 minutes and was dictated by the BBC. However license fee funding permits a 59 minute uninterrupted episode.

2) Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have drastically changed the way audiences watch TV dramas just from things like the availability of content. People are able to watch a variety of shows any time and any where with similar quality to films. Theres also its re-watchability with people even making deluxe additions of shows/films.

3) The rise of streaming has allowed for greater complexity in terms of its storyline due to it having far more freedom especially with the length of they're shows. TV dramas can theoretically last from 60 seconds to 60 hours. Theres been an increase in cliff hangers as well to keep the consumer watching the show one episode after another (this can cause someone to binge watch)

4) The economics of production has widely kept TV dramas to the 45 or 60 minute episode format as they do this to in order to maximise they're use of time and minimise the cost of the actors and crew. While a part of a team films another team has already planned  the next section.

5) Permanent connectivity has changed the consumption and production of TV dramas as people are able to give live tweets of criticism as soon as the episode airs. This can be helpful for the producers but also damaging since sometimes the press tries to "criticise" them for a problem that isn't particularly a problem in the first place and when more people see it blows up this issue out of preportion.
