Music video Introduction

 1) The purpose of music is to sell products. This can be products featured within the music video, the album, merchandise (T-shirts) or maybe even to sell tickets to an upcoming tour.

2) Prior to the digital age acquiring full access to a song with it only being available at certain times that had to be approved by a record company. New technology has eradicated this previous problem with audiences being able to access music from anywhere and at anytime using apps like Youtube.

3) The major record labels behind VEVO are Sony entertainment, Universal music group and Abu Dhabbi

4) Some of the key conventions of a music video are a performance element being ingrained inside the video(close ups of artists),Camera shots (links to performance element),Movement of the camera itself having a narrative, Costume associated with the genre,

5) Narrative can be used within a music video to tell a story revolving around the performer or to make a statement as the world around us. A classic example of a music video that uses a narrative would be Michael Jackson's Thriller.

6) The examples shown in the extract for intertextuality are: Blink 182 in all the small things making a reference to Back Street Boys i want it that way and Christina Aguilera Genie in a bottle.

7) When the audience recognise an intertextual reference they tend to feel a visceral pleasure of achievement for understanding the media they made reference to.

8) Centuries-Music video

  • Conventions- Near the beginning theres slow movement of the camera but it picks up pace and the cuts follow suit. It follows a bit of the normal conventions with it being slightly performance orientated but the singer is never looking at the audience or on screen the entire video has the song as non-diagetic sound and prefers to rely on the narrative of the gladiator fight instead.
  • Representation- The main 4 characters are portrayed as protagonists in this music video with them working together to stand against 1 gladiator.
  • Intertextuality- The music video makes references to mythological and historical events like gladiator battles and Greek deities.
  • Audience- Diversion seems to be a key factor in this music video rather then identity or relationships like other music videos.
  • Institution- Made by fall out boy. They make rock music.
9) The Ice cube music video "it was a good day" sets up several hip-hop music videos through its emphasis on its narrative whilst still having an element of performance. The video pretty much just has Ice cube explaining his routine for the day,

10)I believe music videos aren't as important as they used to be. Before music videos were used to sell records but now theres alternatives for artists to make money for themselves like doing concerts. Music videos are not as essential as they were but they're still used for creative expression.
