TV: Capital Marxism and Hegemony
1) The mail online review suggests that Capital holds a left wing ideology through some of there characters in the show and how the show actively attempts to hate on British life in general.
2) Three quotes that were said from the mails online review are.
- The hardest worker on the street was an illegal immigrant that was determined to pay her way and not touch a penny of benefits.
- Everything British came with a sense of self loathing.
- It started with such a brilliant display but by the end of it we were left staring at a proverbial damn squib.
3) Some scenes or characters that could be seen as promoting left wing ideology are Quentina as she's represented as a victim whose been exploited by the system severely but she herself can do no wrong. The scene with the Kamal family where they insult and ridicule the police officers work. Lastly Rodger being a banker and only focusing on the money he can make.
4) The scene where we get to see the employees at Rodgers workplace with all of the employees being white would be a good scene that reinforces the status quo of most businesses in London. Another scene reinforces the status quo of London could be there depiction of the elderly. The elderly characters are mostly seen as regretful and lonely people within society.
Applying Marxism
1) Marxism suggests that power is held by a minority (The elite) and could use there money and power to gain further wealth.
2) The apprentice is a good example of reinforcing capitalist views for several reasons. One of them being the superior elite who holds all the power, this would be Lord Sugar in this show as this position allows him to basically continue making wealth. The contestants are all dependent on this superior elite and tested to see if they're worthy of there position.
3) Three examples of media texts that demonise/fetishize the working class are: The Daily mail as they ridicule those who live off of benefits. Only fools and horses as despite there economic deprivation they have a close knit family. Lastly Liars Poker as they disregard the working class and only give there attention to those striving to the top and be in a dominant position.
4)
- Capital also does contain the value of being the subdominant position of the masses as a naturalised view as they have Rodger who seems to understand the business better then his boss being below him in power.
- The Kamal family could be an example of the masses following the values and power since they work at a small shop to support there family while people like Rodgers family complain about not making bonuses
- Rodger being subservient to his boss when discovering that the businesses bonus was lower then expected may be an example of the masses accepting the views of the elite.
